Popeye was considered a failure by the studio, and Altman moved to Paris and stopped making Hollywood movies. All through the ’80s he made low-budget adaptations of stage plays, the first of which is Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. I love this movie, but I am skipping over the rest of his ’80s movies. In 1990 Altman’s comeback began with Vincent & Theo, followed in 1992 by the very successful The Player. ’90s Hollywood seemed very excited to see him return, with more ensemble-cast fare like Short Cuts and Prêt-à-Porter. In the naughties he made several more well-received films like Cookie’s Fortune (1999), Dr. T & the Women, and Gosford Park, before ending his career with the very lame Prairie Home Companion. Okay I changed my mind; I’ll add the ’80s movies as well.
