Dawn of the Dead (1978)
There are several versions of Dawn of the Dead. The only one that matters is the 1978 theatrical release, which comes in at 126 minutes. Before release Romero threw together a hasty rough cut that was 139 minutes. Even though in some sense it’s the “director’s cut” since he literally cut it, it is NOT the official cut. Romero considers the theatrical release to be the “director’s cut.” There’s also another version cut by Dario Argento for European audiences that comes in at only 119. (Apparently Argento helped fund the movie in return for using the Goblins for the music and giving Argento control over the European release.) Weirdly, on the internet now, it’s really hard to find the official 126-minute version. The only streaming service with it is Amazon, but it’s the 139-minute version, which is sloppily paced and not as good. Most of the versions on ok.ru are also 139 minutes. So, here is the ONLY version I’ve found so far on the internet of the real movie! Do not support remakes of classic movies, it DESTROYS our ability to watch the original! Do NOT watch it on amazon; it’s the wrong, not-as-good version.
